Liz Barry grew up listening to her local station in her home town of Napier and fell in love radio from an early age. Since the early eighties Liz has worked as a creative writer and announcer in a diverse range of radio stations throughout New Zealand. Now resident in Waikanae, she is thrilled to find herself on the airwaves of Coast Access 104.7 FM.
Last year she hosted a lunch time show on local station Beach FM, but it is on RNZ National where many listeners will have heard her voice before. For seventeen years Liz wrote and scheduled promos for RNZ National and Concert, presented the All Night show on occasions, and was the corporate voice of Radio New Zealand.
Liz is best known for hosting her own Saturday afternoon New Zealand music show ‘Home Grown’ on RNZ National. Followers of New Zealand music, independent music labels and Kiwi musicians gained significant exposure for the eight years that Liz presented Home Grown. When RNZ National launched its 101FM network, Liz took her show on the road and across two years did live broadcasts from Whangarei to Bluff.
During her time at Radio New Zealand Liz also produced and presented many musical documentaries profiling well known NZ musicians such as Barry Saunders, Brent Eccles and others. Her love of electronic music led her 10-part series Night Manouvres, and it was Liz who introduced the ears of the nation to bands like Fat Freddies Drop, Trinity Roots and the Phoenix Foundation.
For three years Liz also was a podcaster, presenting The New Zealand Music Show as a downloadable weekly podcast. She is on the judging panel for the annual NZ Music Awards, writes album reviews for NZ Musician Magazine and was the NZ music reviewer for TVNZ’s Good Morning show.
Promoting local music and artists is a passion for Liz so expect to hear interviews and features by many of our finest Kapiti and Horowhenua musicians on the airwaves of Coast Access 104.7FM along with tasty lashings of her personal favourites, ranging from indie, jazz, blues to rock, pop and everything between!
